What I bought from Macau

Happy Friday all! :D

It’s been a rather packed November for me so far and there’s still more to come as November ain’t finished yet!

I started the month off with a company trip to Macau and took some time off the following week to return to Malaysia over the Diwali public holiday. All that travelling meant that I didn’t spend more than 5 days in any one country over the past 2 weeks and yes, my skin did act up a bit. :( Hopefully with a little bit of downtime in the next week or so I’ll be refreshed and ready for my next travelling stint!

While I was in Macau for a whirlwind 3 days at the beginning of the month, I managed to squeeze in a fair bit of shopping even though I visited only 2 shopping spots – the Sasa in the Venetian Macau and a small Bonjour at Senado Square (I saw a second, larger Bonjour also at Senado Square but ran out of time!).

Dior Macau haul

First up is my Dior haul – I’m very into the Capture Totale range right now after incorporating the One Essential super serum into my night routine. What better time to stock up on mini sample/travel sizes of the Capture Totale range than when you’re at a Bonjour store? Heheheh.

Ever since I returned from Macau, I switched over to using the Capture Totale range exclusively together with L’Oreal’s Youth Code range and so far, my skin’s loving it! (My purse may not love it so much though…) Now if only I could score a sample of the One Essential mask somewhere… :P

Sasa Macau haul

This is the rest of the stuff I managed to get my hands on – the Shu Uemura eyelash curler also came from Bonjour, the L’Oreal Youth Code Luminize from Nuance-Watson (because it’s not available in Singapore or Malaysia), Lush’s Angels on Bare Skin (I blame this impulse purchase on Paris B’s review – on hindsight I should have just gotten it from Lush Singapore), Revlon Just Bitten lip balm stains (this one I blame on Kahani’s review – I picked up four more for Toughcookee by proxy! #evurl shopping FTW! and cleared the racks at Sasa) and a Clarins gommage that intrigued me.

I should be all shopped out for November but… my company is sending me to Hong Kong for a seminar at the end of the month, which means MORE SHOPPING! :P

I promise I’ll be good for the rest of the year after this month (only one more month left in the year anyway). Heh.

Introducing Fabulous Finds – Malaysia’s first Beauty Box subscription service

If you’ve ever enviously looked on while our beauty blogging sisters in UK, US, Australia and Singapore talked about the beauty box subscriptions available to them, fret no more! Starting from now, Malaysia has its first beauty box in Fabulous Finds.

fabulous finds 01

For just RM35 a month, you’ll get 4 – 5 deluxe beauty samples from high-end and niche brands in a pretty box and delivered to your doorstep via courier.

I was invited to the launch of Fabulous Finds last Saturday and had a preview of the July box. What’s in the box?

As a nail polish hoarder, my first thought on seeing the pretty melon-pink box was, ‘Yes! I can keep more polishes in that box!’ :P because that’s how I’m storing my ever-expanding collection of polishes.

fabulous finds 03

Inside the box we find:

  • Beaubelle Clarity Brightening Cleansing Exfoliator
  • Beaubelle Gorgeous Multi Defence Protection Cream
  • Burt’s Bees Cranberry & Pomegranate Scrub
  • Burt’s Bees Milk & Honey Body Lotion
  • Burt’s Bees Sensitive Daily Moisturising Cream
  • Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional
  • Crabtree & Evelyn Iris Ultra-Moisturising Hand Therapy
  • Lunasol Skin Fusing Powder Foundation
  • Shu Uemura Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil

I was quite pleased with the brands represented in the first ever Fabulous Finds box – well known brands do a lot in reassuring me and I like that they were not your average drugstore brand but yet not so high-end so as to make them inaccessbile.

The deluxe beauty samples in the box were pretty decent too, and there was one full sized product in the Crabtree & Evelyn Hand Therapy tube which if you buy retail is about RM25. Also, the Beaubelle products, Benefit’s POREfessional and Lunasol powder were travel-sized.

The subscription point of RM35 is reasonable in my opinion, and not likely to break the bank for a boxful of pretty surprises. I personally like to think of my beauty box subscriptions as little monthly presents to myself for being a good girl. *cough* :P

fabulous finds 02

But you know what really made me like Fabulous Finds? I like that the founder, Hui Ling (that’s her in the picture above), really believes in giving back to the community. Did you know that each box is packed with care by women from disadvantaged backgrounds? This gives them the opportunity to gain employment and supplement their income even though it may not be able to provide them with a full-time income.

I’m really looking forward to see how Fabulous Finds progresses with their subsequent boxes and am more than happy to support a homegrown, local business.

You can subscribe to Fabulous Finds’ July box for just RM35 before 14 July 2012 as the boxes will be mailed out by courier starting 15 July 2012. There are only 180 boxes for July so you’ll need to be quick to reserve your box! Subscribe at the Fabulous Finds website here. Only available to residents of Malaysia.

What’s inside my Bellabox June 2012

june bellabox

I think of all the Bellaboxes I’ve received thus far, I’m liking the June Bellabox most of all. :D

Themed the Summer Upgrade box, I was extremely psyched to find out that June’s box included sample/travel sizes of the following products:

  • Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate
  • Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner
  • Ralph Lauren Romance
  • Biotherm White D-Tox BB Cream
  • Biotherm Lait Corporel Body Moisturizer
  • Lancome Blanc Expert Derm-Crystal
  • Lancome Genifique Youth Activator
  • Shu Uemura Whitefficient Brightening Gentle Cleansing Oil

Whew! That’s quite a bumper box of goodies! :D

So far I’ve already dug into Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate and you can betcha I’ll be purchasing this once I’ve finished up my sample. I’ve already been using Ralph Lauren’s Romance perfume, so having a travel vial allows me to keep it in the office.

Do you have a Bellabox subscription already? Or does this box tempt you to sign up?

If I assembled a Beauty Box…

A group of blogger friends and I were discussing the recent beauty subscription box phenomenon in the region and we kind of got to wondering what we would put into a beauty box, if given the opportunity.

Me? I didn’t know what I wanted to put in. So I went with personal favourites or things I wanted to try.

estee lauder advanced night repair

First, let’s start with the first serum I ever tried – the revered Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Repair Complex. Briefly, this gives me rejuvenated skin every time I use it and is a regular staple in my skincare routine.

by terry eclat de rose sheer tinted moisturizer

Next, I’d put in By Terry’s Eclat De Rose Sheer Tinted Moisturiser for that natural no make-up look that every female covets. Why this brand? Because it’s rather luxe and expensive and not easily obtainable. Heh.

fresh sugar lip treatment

Next to cross my mind was Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment for soft, kissable lips. Nevermind that I’ve not yet tried this (even though I’ve picked up it up in Sephora a few times already and then put it back). A girl can’t have too many lip balms or lip treatments in her purse or drawer.

Then I’d include Shu Uemura’s famous Hard Formula brow pencil, plus a voucher for their famous Brow Atelier service. It really is true that your brows frame your eyes and can open up your facial features if nicely shaped.

Finally, let’s add in an item that could be a hit or miss, depending on whether you like it or not. It’s a purely selfish choice, driven by my current obsession with nail polishes – Cult Nails limited edition Seduction. Because it’s pretty and eye-catching and every girl should have the opportunity to own a duochrome flakie polish.

I realize that the stuff I’ve chosen may not be liked by all but hey, everyone’s got a different idea of perfect, right? ;)

Here’s what my blogger friends would put into their beauty boxes:

Disappointed with Shu Uemura’s Mid Valley outlet

I’ve previously written about my good experiences with Shu Uemura’s Brow Atelier here. I whole-heartedly endorse them as the saviours of my uneven brows since 2009 and still do, but a recent experience at the Mid Valley Megamall standalone outlet means that I won’t be going back there (adding on to my blacklist together with the Pavilion standalone outlet).

As far as I’ve been patronizing Shu Uemura, I’ve always had my brows done as a walk-in customer. However, when I dropped by the Mid Valley Megamall outlet last month, I was curtly told by one of the consultants there (don’t know if she was the store supervisor or not, but she was behind the cashier counter) that if I wanted to get my brows done, I should make an appointment in advance and they were not entertaining walk-ins. And this was even though there was only one other customer undergoing the very same service at the time.

Naturally when faced with unhelpful customer service, I always walk away.

It was a different story at my regular Shu Uemura outlet at 1Utama just one week later. I was warmly greeted by the consultant who attended to me very nicely and made me happy by giving me perfect brows. Not one mention was made about the need for an ‘appointment’ first before she would attend to me.

So ladies wanting to try out Shu Uemura’s Brow Atelier services, I will only recommend the standalone outlets at 1Utama and Empire Shopping Gallery for their good customer service.

A miniature haul from Hong Kong!

Ah Hong Kong! How I miss shopping there already… and I’ve only been back for a week. :P

Being a total newbie (it was my maiden trip to HK), I was totally unprepared for the bright lights and myriad stores. But I was lost the moment Kahani introduced me to Bonjour.

When she showed me the section on sample/travel sized products, I was completely sold on the concept and there was no turning back. The majority of the stuff you see in the picture below is from Bonjour, with a purchase each from Sasa, Harvey Nichols Beauty Hall and duty-free at Changi Terminal.

Hong Kong miniature haul

In no particular order, I came back with :
1. Revlon Colorburst Lipgloss in Rose Perle
2. Steam Cream
3. Lanvin Marry Me perfume miniature
4. Talika Lipocils Expert eyelash serum
5. Lancome Hydra Zen Neocalm detoxifying moisturising multi-relief anti-stress gel essence
6. Lancome Hydra Zen extreme soothing moisturising cream-gel
7. Lancome Genifique Youth Activator serum
8. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex serum
9. Estee Lauder Hydrationist Moisture Barrier Fortifier ultra-hydration serum
10. Dior Capture Totale One Essential skin boosting super serum
11. Diorsnow White Reveal essence
12. Shu Uemura UV Armor high protection face cream SPF 50
13. Shu Uemura Deepsea Hydrability moisturizing gel cream
14. Clarins Beauty Flash Balm
15. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial micro serum
16. Laniege Water Sleeping Pack_Ex
17. Guerlain Orchidee Imperiale exceptional complete care serum
18. Clinique Take The Day Off makeup remover

Whew! That’s a lot of miniature stuff, methinks! :P

And did you notice anything about the list above? It’s mostly skincare with a heavy slant towards hydrating stuff and anti-aging stuff.

I’ve been lemming quite a number of these serums for some time now, so yes, I am one very happy camper. Let’s hope that my sensitive/problematic skin takes kindly to me experimenting in the next few months!

How I wish I had access to these miniature pretties in Singapore or Malaysia all the time…

L’Oreal Luxury Sale

Ah, my favorite warehouse sale is back. :)

L'Oreal luxury warehouse sale

As the picture says, you can get deals on cosmetics and fragrances from Lancome, Biotherm, Shu Uemura, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Cacharel, Guy Laroche and Diesel.

I’ve never missed a sale since I found out about it two years back, and if you shop carefully, there are likely bargains to be found especially if you know the usual recommended retail price. It is interesting to note though that prices at these ‘warehouse/clearance’ sales have been steadily increasing and while still cheaper than the average over-the-counter price, it is no longer a steal by any means. Still, as the savvy shopper who can suss out a good deal from an average deal, you’ll be fine.

Happy shopping!

Shu Uemura Brow Atelier

I’ll have to admit that I was late to cotton on to the magic of transformation that a simple brow shaping can give your face. In fact, I think I only started taking my brow shape seriously after twenty-something. Heh. Mainly, my disregard to this area of my face was due to the fact that I simply didn’t know how to shape my brows well and partly because my mother was always reminding (nagging!) me not to over-tweeze my brows. So why bother, I used to think.

However, ever since I’ve discovered Shu Uemura’s Brow Atelier (a fancy name for their brow shaping services) I’ve never looked back. In about 10 – 15 minutes, any consultant at Shu Uemura’s counter can transform your shaggy, unkempt, overgrown brows into beautifully shaped and trimmed brows that frame your eyes and enhance your facial outlook. And you do know that the saying goes that “Eyes are the windows to the soul”, right?

Here’s a quick rundown on what happens when you get your brows done at Shu Uemura. (Note : There is no standard shaping technique overall as I’ve noticed that the items and technique used vary from consultant to consultant.) Usually, the consultant attending to you will :

~ Clean the equipment (blade, scissors, tweezer) using a cotton pad and make-up remover and wipe dry with tissue.
~ Assist you to remove any makeup residue if you have drawn or shaded in your brows.
~ Clip up your fringe (depending on your hairstyle).
~ Tweeze off most of the visible brow hairs that are growing out of the brow area.
~ Use a blade to shave off brow hairs into the desired brow shape.
~ Use a spoolie and scissors to trim longer brow hairs to achieve a neat look.
~ Repeat as necessary until you get perfect brows.

I’m not sure since I only get my brows done at the standalone outlets at either 1Utama or MidValley Megamall, but I would presume that the regular Shu counters at major department stores would also provide the same service.

Shu Uemura Brow Atelier
Available at all Shu Uemura outlets.
Cost : MYR30 for a total reshape or MYR20 for maintenance.

However, if you feel brave enough to go it alone and shape your brows yourself, Connie of Skindeco has a really good step-by-step guide here. Syen of So Loverly also has a mini discussion on whether to pluck, shave, thread or wax your brows into shape here.
